NPMC Cardiologist providing new treatment option for patients with in-stent restenosis

National Park Medical Center (NPMC) is proud to announce that Dr. David Dobies, interventional cardiologist, is now performing advanced procedures using drug-coated balloon technology to treat patients with in-stent restenosis. This offers a new option that improves outcomes and reduces the need for additional stent placement.
In-stent restenosis is a condition that can occur following stent placement where treated blood vessels gradually narrow again due to excessive scar tissue formation within the stent. Traditionally, patients experiencing restenosis require placement of an additional stent inside the original, which could further restrict blood flow due to overlapping layers of metal.
The introduction of drug-coated balloon technology represents a significant advancement in treating this condition. The balloon delivers medication directly to the arterial wall to inhibit scar tissue growth while restoring vessel patency—all without implanting an additional stent.
“Restenosis is not benign,” said Dr. Dobies. “It often leads to the recurrence of cardiac symptoms. This technology allows us to treat the problem effectively while reducing the risk of it happening again.”

“I told Dr. Dobies he’s my hero,” Pate said during a follow-up interview three months after her treatment. “You made it happen. You went to battle for me. I feel like I got the procedure that I needed.”
Prior to receiving the drug-coated balloon treatment, Pate experienced multiple repeat procedures.
“It’s terrible when you have to keep your suitcase ready to go at all times,” she said, reflecting on frequent hospital visits before her most recent treatment.
Dr. Dobie emphasized the long-term benefits of the approach:
