National Park Medical Center Names 2020 Mercy Award Winner

Sheila Paskell, RN, recognized for demonstrating compassion and unwavering commitment to helping others.

National Park Medical Center recently announced that Sheila Paskell, RN, has been recognized as the hospital’s 2020 Mercy Award winner. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of LifePoint Health’s hospitals who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.

The Mercy Award is an annual recognition program established in 2002 to honor the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, LifePoint’s founding chairman and chief executive officer. The award is considered the highest honor a LifePoint employee can receive.

She goes above and beyond each and every day to ensure that every person she encounters receives the highest level of care and compassion.”

Sheila is an RN in the National Park Medical Center ICU, and in her 17 and a half years at NPMC she has also worked as a phlebotomist and cardiac rehab assistant. Sheila was nominated by her manager, Jewell Briggs, who asked ICU co-workers how they would describe Sheila. The words compassionate, spiritual, efficient, always positive, warm-hearted, sympathetic, hardworking, empathetic, optimistic and cheerful were all used. Sheila is a community servant, organizing Thanksgiving blessing baskets, toy drives, angel tree campaigns and food drives for at-risk families in our community. She also makes it easier for co-workers to donate by managing a drop-off point at the hospital. She volunteers for the Webb Community Center and is very active in her church, where she is the founder of the Women in Purpose Ministry, providing mentorship and guidance for young women. Also through her church, Sheila started an annual community health and resource fair which includes free screenings, educational sessions and panel discussions for attendees. She also hosts a prayer line and supports the “We Care Unit Ministry” which provides a monthly lunch for families in our ICU waiting rooms and provides toiletries for the Potters Clay Women’s Recovery Center.

Each hospital winner, including Sheila, will be considered for LifePoint’s 2020 companywide Mercy Award. The companywide winner will be announced this summer and honored during a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., in October, to which Sheila and all hospital winners are invited to attend.
